Week 7: Collective Proposal

Illustration for Week 7

W.A.G.E. (Working Artists and the Greater Economy) is a New York-based organization that advocates for fair compensation and labor practices for artists and cultural workers. The organization was founded in 2008 by a group of artists and activists who were concerned about the exploitation of artists in the art world and the lack of support for their work. W.A.G.E. advocates for policy changes that support fair compensation and labor practices for artists, such as the implementation of a living wage for artists and the establishment of a union for cultural workers.

  1. We are not hosting class next week due to Spring Break. Instead, we will spend the first week researching other collectives and how they build infrastructure to support their work and sustain themselves. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Research Collectives.
  2. We will move on to the next project, which is to design an engagement that activates collective action. For detailed instructions, please refer to the Activation page. We wil work on part 1, 2 and 3 of the project during the next two weeks. When we meet on March 24, please be prepared to discuss your research, topics, and idea for the activation project.
  3. If you decide to work on the same engagement as your groupmates, please make sure to coordinate and communicate with each other to ensure that your work is aligned and complementary. You can choose to work on different aspects of the same engagement, or you can choose to work on different engagements that are all connected by a common thread. The important thing is that you are all working together to support each other and amplify each other’s work. Please make sure to include all group members’ names in the submission form for both the research and activation projects, and to bring any materials or artifacts related to your projects to class to share with your peers.
